Life on Board
Africa is the greatest continent on earth for a real safari adventure holiday......
For over 10 years Global Village and its partners in Africa have been safely sending thousands of travellers on unforgettable overland and safari travel. Our tours vary from 3 days to 56 days including fantastic game viewing in the National Parks of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. You can experience some of Africa's most amazing sights including the Ngorongoro Crater, the Okavango Delta, the famous Masai Mara Game Reserve and Victoria Falls. If you’ve got plenty of time and have been to Africa yourself then you can overland yourself. But because of security, money and time issues most travellers opt for an overland truck trip down through Africa.
To be honest, it take away a lot of the hassles, allows you to meet like-minded travellers and gets to parts of Africa that you just wouldn’t see yourself.
Overlanding allows you the flexibility to get off the beaten track and visit some of the most stunning or remote locations on the planet. An overland expedition isn’t a Contiki-style tour where everything happens automatically and easily. Its adventurous and fun but you’re going to have to carry your own rucksack, put up your tent (We’ll show you how!) and make your own bed.
Everyone will be expected to pitch in with grocery market, firewood collection, washing up and other camp chores. If you don’t mind getting your hands dirty, possess a bit of fitness and a positive, enthusiastic and relaxed attitude, keenness to explore and experience different cultures and are not averse to the odd screw-up, then overlanding is for you! Its also great fun and a once in a lifetime opportunity, to explore the most amazingly beautiful continent on earth.
However (and please believe that we’re not being judgemental here – this is just from experience) if you’re honest with yourself and you’re a bit of a moany, lazy, misery-guts who expects everything done for them, and hates most of the other people in the world, especially those in a diverse group of characters, then we’d probably suggest that overlanding isn’t for you….
Expeditions - life on the road
Driving days normally commence at around 8am and finish around 5pm, with stops for lunch, grocery purchases if required and local sightseeing. While you’re not on the road every day (being dependent upon where we are and what distance needs to be achieved), you will sometimes drive for two or three days in a row.
Travelling on the road is rewarded by stops that range from a night to a couple of nights where you’ll have free time to relax, explore and undertake some optional excursions.
We always arrive at our destination before nightfall (except under extenuating circumstances) in order to pitch camp before dark. In choosing our campsite, facilities such as security, availability of water, waste disposal and communications are taken into account at permanent sites, though sometimes bush camps are chosen where no facilities are available. It all adds up to the experience of a lifetime.
Our Expedition vehicles
Our main suppliers have over 38 vehicles, which are owned and operated them. In the main, they are Mercedes Benz trucks although they use MAN's and Ford Cargo's as well.
These vehicles have been designed and built to give the greatest security and comfort to you, the passenger. The vehicles are fully self sufficient with all cooking and camping equipment, cassette players, exterior and interior lighting, windows, lockers, long range fuel tanks as well as 300 to 400 litre water tanks.
The trucks are fitted with comfortable cloth-upholstered coach style seats. Our multi-directional seat layout affords excellent all-round viewing and a more social experience for travellers, whilst the vehicle is in motion, not to mention more legroom. Seating for around 30 passengers (dependent on which model of truck is overlanding).
All season roll up PVC or tarpaulin windows, which allow for exceptional viewing.
Large, secure baggage lockers for all your gear.
Onboard truck safe for valuables.
Onboard kitchen with gas supply and storage.
Large water, fuel and food carrying capacities, allowing for extensive travelling range.
Range of mechanical spares and tools
Sand mats, shovels, winches
Radio/cassette stereo or CD system - most trucks.
Professionally compiled medical kit.
Intercom link with Driver and Trip Leader - some trucks
Coolbox for perishables
Internal and external lights.
Modest library of books and maps
Camping & Additional Equipment
Spacious, durable 2-person A-frame or dome tents; easily assembled with sewn-in ground sheets and fly sheet.
Comprehensive range of cooking and catering equipment including cutlery and crockery, cooler box, tables and individual camp stools, gas and fire grills for cooking and BBQs
Interior/exterior truck lighting and an all-weather awning (for shade and inclement weather)
On most trips there are three crew members. They are the Trip Leader, the Driver and the Safari Cook.
All the crew have a love of the countries they are travelling in, which is one of the most important requirements for your trip. Most of the crew have spent many years travelling through and have extensive knowledge of the countries you are travelling in. We feel that their enthusiasm as well as their experience will guarantee you have an unforgettable trip.
Food and Cooking
Your Safari Cook generally does the cooking, although even with this bonus we ask that you participate in the preparation on a rota basis. Meals and menus will vary to some extent as you travel through Africa. We endeavour to experience eating a varying array of the local dishes that you will find in the countries we are travelling through. We purchase food daily from the markets and road stalls along the way, which is ably supported by a bulk buy of goods prior to departure.
